HOW YOU CAN GET THE BEST RESULTS FROM THE BREAST - DOING THE BREAST SELF-EXAM RIGHT (PART 1)
There is value in doing the breast self-exam cor-recdy; it won't do you much good to do it wrong, which is unfortunately what many women do. First of all, since most breasts are somewhat lumpy, if you don't do the exam systematically you're likely to be scared by just about everything you feel. Second, if you're "feeling" the breast incorrectly, you're more likely to miss the kinds of lumps that matter. But don't worry: it's not hard to do breast self-exams properly—you just have to be taught. Nothing's better than learning from an experienced teacher in person, but try to follow the pattern below and you'll gready improve your technique.
One of the best breast self-exam techniques— and the one we'll focus on—is the Mammacare method, which is illustrated below. A favorite saying of Henry Pennypacker, a behavioral psychologist who developed the Mammacare method, is "if you can teach fingers to read braille, you can teach them to read small breast lumps." He was proved right when a woman in Hershey, Pennsylvania set the record for finding the smallest two tumors ever caught with this method: both lumps were two millimeters in size!
