TETANUS: DESCRIPTION AND REMEDIES
Clostridium Tetani is one of three very unpleasant sister organisms that cause Tetanus, Gas Gangrene and Botulism. All of these bacteria live in the soil and they will live there for ever. It was never the rusty nail or piece of barbed wire that caused the problem with Tetanus. It was the likelihood that such a wound could be contaminated by the soil.
Tetanus immunization beginning at three months of age stimulates antibodies to the toxin produced by the Tetanus bacteria. The immune response does not effect a Tetanus infection. It takes out the Tetanus toxins before they can interact with the neuromuscular junction producing muscle spasm, lock jaw and death by paralysis of the muscles of respiration.
Tetanus is always present in the soil there can be no room for complacency. Elderly Australian women are a group of citizens at risk because they like to work in the garden. Their husbands were often immunized in relation to military service in the Second World War; but the wives have little remaining immunity. Tetanus boosters must be taken every ten years. If 20 years have elapsed the original course of injections must be started all over again.
Home Remedies
Don't be fooled by a beautiful garden. Always wear gloves and protective clothing in the garden. Wash and clean any cut or laceration with antiseptic. Always wash your hands after working in the garden and wash home grown fruit and salad vegetables before consumption. Take any deep laceration contaminated with soil to the doctor irrespective of the timing of your last Tetanus injection.
