- Denomination.
Viagra.
- Active substance.
Sildenafil is the active substance of VIAGRA. One tablet of the drug contains 25 mg, 50 mg or 100 mg of Sildenafil (as Sildenafil Citrate)
- Indications for Use.
Treatment of patients with erection disruptions, which is defined as inability to reach and retain the erection of penis, necessary for a sexual intercourse.
- Action.
VIAGRA is the first representative of a new group of medications which are called inhibitors of phospodiesterase of type 5. The drug enlarges blood vessels of penis during sexual excitement. This results in the enhancement of blood flow in penis which favours a normal erection.
- Posology and Administration.
Sexual excitement is needed for the development of the drug’s performance. A recommended dose for men above 18 years old is 50 mg to be taken orally about 1 hour before a sexual intercourse. With consideration of efficiency and tolerance the dose will be increased up to 100 mg or reduced to 25 mg. Maximal recommended dose is 100 mg, maximal frequency of intake is once in 24 hours. The performance of Viagra with a simultaneous meals intake will be developed later in comparison with a fasting intake.
Viagra is not indicated for use in persons under 18 years old.
There is no need to correct a dose in elderly patients.
- Counterindications.
Elevated sensitivity to any component of the drug;
simultaneous administration with donators NO (amilnitrate or nitrates) due to its possibility to enhance their hypotensive action. Drugs for the treatment of erection disruptions, including Sildenafil, should not be administered to the patient for whom sexual activity is unwanted (for instance, patients with severe forms of cardio-vascular diseases, such as unstable stenocardia or frank heart failure).
- Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…
If you suffer from any of the below mentioned diseases, inform your doctor before you take VIAGRA:
crescent cell anemia (change of red blood cells),
leukemia (cancer of blood cells),
multiple myeloma (cancer of marrow)
disease or deformation of the penis.
During the treatment by the medications which influence erection disorders, special precautions may be needed for men with such diseases:
rare eye disease called pigment retinitis,
ulcer of stomach and diseases, accompanied with bleedings (for instance hemophilia). With such diseases VIAGRA may give undesired effects.
VIAGRA should not be applied in combination with other medications intended for erection disorders treatment
Use in children.
VIAGRA should not be given to children.
Use in elderly people and in people with kidney and liver diseases.
There are no special recommendations on the treatment of elderly people or patients with kidney or liver diseases. No need of precautions in driving or mechanisms operating
- Interface with other medications.
You should inform your doctor about all the medications which you use. VIAGRA may interface with some medicines. VIAGRA may provoke unwanted enhancement of other medications, which are called donators of nitrogen oxide or nitrates (they are used for stenocardia treatment). If you use such drugs IT IS PROHIBITED TO TAKE VIAGRA!
- Overdosing.
In examinations made with healthy volunteers, with a single-shot of the drug’s intake in doses up to 800 mg the side effects were similar to those which were observed with Viagra’s intake in lower doses, but the frequency of their development and the severity grade were increased. In case of overdosing usually a standard supporting therapy is done. Dialysis does not speed up the elimination of the drug, as Sildenafil is stably linked with the whites of the plasma of blood.
- Side effects.
They were transitive, light or moderately frank. During investigations the frequency and severity of side effects increase with the increase of a dose.
The most frequent side effects were as follows:
headache (10,8%),
dizziness (2,9%);
hyperemia of skin (10,9%),
feeling of heartbeat (1%);
dyspepsia (3%);
haziness of vision, elevated sensitivity to the light (2,5%),
color vision (1,1%);
rhinitis (stuffy nose) (2,1%).
In some patients after 1 hour of the drug intake in a dose of 100 mg during a 100-colored Farnsworth-Munsell test there was revealed a light and temporary disturbance of colored vision (blue/green color), moreover, 2 hours after the drug intake there was not observed any changes. A possible mechanism of such changes in color discrimination is conditioned by a suppression of PDEВ 6, which is contained in a photomodifying cascade of retina. Sildenafil did not influence an acute vision and a contrast one, showings of electroretinogram, tension of eye and the results of pupilomertry.
In a post-registration period there observed untypical or rare reactions against the drug intake:
iimmune system – reaction of hypersensitivity (including skin rash),
cardio-vascular – tachycardia, arterial hypotension, syncope, nose bleeding;
bowels - vomiting,
vision – ache in eyes, redness of eyes;
reproduction system – prolonged erection or priapism.
- Pregnancy and Lactation.
The drug is not indicated for women.
- Driving.
As during clinical studies of Sildenafil there have been observed dizziness and vision disturbances, it is important to determine an individual reaction of patient before driving vehicles or work with potentially hazardous mechanisms.
